Final Progress ReportRenew NOLA is happy to report that we've achieved our goal of raising $100,000 for local Greater New Orleans charities affected by Hurricane Katrina! At the same time it is with mixed emotions that we also inform you that Renew NOLA will cease accepting donations and suspend operations on April 30, 2009. Since we started on September 14, 2005, we've focused on two goals - creating awareness for the needs of local Greater New Orleans charities and raising funds through donations for those charities involved in the active rebuilding of the city. For the second goal, we set a target of $100,000 as the amount we wanted to raise. Over the past three and half years we've received thousands of donations from individuals and companies located all across the globe that has allowed us the privilege of achieving this goal. In turn, we've donated those funds to two dozen Greater New Orleans charities that are diverse in their missions, yet all committed to making the renewal of the city a reality. Achieving our goal is truly a source of great pride given we started from scratch with nothing more than a conviction to help New Orleans recover and did it primarily $3 at a time through rubber bracelet donations. Fortunately, our conviction was shared by an incalculable number of people who have also contributed to the renewal of the city in unprecedented ways. From the charities listed on this Website to waves of volunteers from all sectors and walks of life offering their time and skills, its clear people share a love for the city that will not soon let her die. Yes, New Orleans still has a long life in front of her. In many respects New Orleans has never looked better given that many of the repairs made to homes and buildings were to done to fix problems that persisted long before Katrina ever made landfall. Great strides have been made in restoring the city as a premier shipping port and world-renowned tourist destination. Even the NOPD has increased its ranks to the point that the National Guard is no longer needed. Unfortunately, it's also true that many of the surrounding neighborhoods, i.e. New Orleans East, still continue to struggle since the storm; however, noticeable improvements are starting to be made there too. Is the city perfect? No, but what city is? Is there still a lot of work to be done? Absolutely. Have we lost our commitment to helping the city continually improve? Absolutely not. However, time changes perspective. In one sense, time truly is a healer because improvements are made; problems are solved. In Renew NOLA's case, our existence grew out of a need to help the city recover after Katrina and the city has, for all intents and purposes, done that. Of course, the passing of time also causes memories to fade. For many, this is good because most people want to move on with their lives by keeping Katrina where she belongs, in the past. That doesn't mean people shouldn't remember lessons learned and apply them in the future. We sincerely hope the Corps of Engineers is doing that. However, for us it's simple - like the National Guard, we've done our job and now it's time to focus our attention elsewhere. Going forward we encourage you to please direct your time, attention and resources to the charities we've supported. The're all listed below and as you can see, they're a diverse group. Undoubtedly, one will appeal to you, so in lieu of support to Renew NOLA we ask you to support them directly instead. Clicking on their name or link below will take you directly to their home page. We'd like to end by thanking everyone that has helped Renew NOLA achieve our goal over the past three and a half years. Without your help and support THE RENEW NEW ORLEANS FOUNDATION would not have existed. Fortunately for the people you've helped, it did and for that we truly thank you!! New
